The phrase "good enough for Mount Gilead" has been circulating in our community for a long time, and I believe it's something that needs attention. On the surface, it seems to express a level of contentment with the way things are, suggesting that what we have should suffice. Well intended it may be, but this mentality of "good enough" doesn't do justice to our under-served areas and marginalized citizens. Settling for "good enough" often results in unequal distribution of resources, where the loudest voices or the "squeaky wheels" get the grease, while the quiet struggles of others go unnoticed or unaddressed.
The old adage that "better is the enemy of done" might be practical in some scenarios, but when it comes to community improvement, it's a mindset we can't afford to have. 'Done' for one person or one part of town should not equate to 'done for all.' We should strive for a level of "better" that uplifts everyone, particularly those who have been traditionally overlooked. Let's not aim to simply pacify the most vocal among us but rather work diligently to elevate the well-being of the whole community. A rising tide lifts all boats. My strategy here is listening more and doing more, not just for some, but for everyone who lives in our town. It's not just about solving the issues that are right in front of us; it's about digging deeper to uncover the root causes of disparity and addressing them head-on.
Our struggles may be individually different, but our common cause of bettering our community can be worked on together. I'm here to help where the need is greatest, and I need your involvement to tell me where that is. I want to amplify your voice.
